HOW TO KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

Do you know your skin type? I bet a lot of you are still confuse which skin type you have. In today's blog post, I will be helping you out to determine which skin type you have. It is important for you to know your skin type because every skin type reacts differently to each ingredients. Some products might not be the best products for your skin. Which is why knowing your skin type is extremely essential for your skin care.

In order for you to know your skin type, let us do this simple steps.

First, use a gentle cleanser and foam it up to your hand and gently rub it across your face for about 30 to 45 seconds before rinsing.

Second, after cleansing your face, pat dry and wait for about an hour and let it rest. Make sure not to apply any product or moisturizer during this time.

Third, after about an hour look in front of the mirror and examine your skin.



OILY

If you notice that your skin is greasy or shiny in most areas especially around your nose area and cheeks then you have an oily skin type.  Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum. Sebum is an oily and waxy substance found in our skin.

SOLUTION: Look for products that contains  the following ingredients:

  • Salicylic Acid - exfoliates skin, unclog pores, anti-inflammatory and has antibacterial properties.
  • Hyaluronic Acid & Glycerin - Keeps your skin hydrated, it works by attracting water from the environment into the skin.
  • Bentonite -  this clay helps remove sebum, or oil from the skin’s surface it may also have a calming effect on inflamed breakouts.
  • Benzoyl Peroxide - exfoliates skin, kills the bacteria that causes acne though this can also cause dryness and irritation that is why it is best used as a spot treatment only.
  • Retinol - Brightens dull skin by exfoliating at a cellular level, which results in brighter and smoother new skin. Regulate oily skin and minimize breakouts. Fades dark age spots, sun spots and hyperpigmentation and even out complexion over time.
  • Centella Asiatica - provides just the right amount of moisture that your skin needs. It hydrates the skin and also keeps the oiliness away.

SKIN CARE INGREDIENTS THAT YOU SHOULD AVOID:

  • Mineral Oil
  • Petrolatum Alcohol

DRY

If your skin feels tight and stripped and notice some flakiness or tiny lines whenever you make a facial expression then you have a dry skin type. People may experience dry skin on their face as a result of many factors such as changes in temperature or humidity, using harsh skin care products and skin conditions such as eczema.

SOLUTION: Look for products that contains the following ingredients:

  • Hyaluronic Acid & Glycerin - Keeps your skin hydrated, works by attracting water from the environment into the skin.
  • Centella Asiatica - Provides just the right amount of moisture that your skin needs. It hydrates the skin and also keeps the oiliness away.
  • Ceramides - Lipid (fats) that naturally in skin, it helps the skin by forming a protective layer to help prevent moisture loss and visible damage form environmental stressors. Ceramides also help to keep your skin supple.
  • Antioxidants -Helps skin repair itself,  protects your skin and reduce pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles.

    SKIN CARE INGREDIENTS THAT YOU SHOULD AVOID:

    • Retinoid
    • Benzoyl Peroxide
    • Alcohols
    • Salicylic Acid
    • Fragrances and Preservatives

    COMBINATION

    If you notice that your skin in some areas of your face has shiny spots typically within the T-ZONE area (forehead, nose and chin) and feels tight or flaky on certain area then you have a combination skin type. Several factors contribute to the development of combination skin, but sometimes it's just genetics. Other causes of combination skin are out of your control like the weather and your age.

    SOLUTION: Look for products that contains the following ingredients:

    Hyaluronic Acid - It hydrates and smooths the skin and is able to fight both oiliness and dryness

    AHA/BHA - Exfoliate your skin and help cleanse your skin of excess oil or debris while killing the bacteria that causes acne. 

    Niacinamide - this ingredient is actually good for all skin types. Repairs damage skin, neutralize free radical that can cause skin cancer and the breakdown of collagen and elastin. It also increases the production of ceramides, improves skin discoloration, anti-inflammatory, decrease oil production and reduce the appearance of visible pores. 

    NORMAL (HEALTHY)


    Normal skin is a term widely used to refer to well-balanced skin not too dry not too oily, normal skin has zero to few imperfections, less likely to break out, pores are normal size not too large not to small, feels soft and supple, less irritation, no rough texture or flakiness. If you have this kind of skin type then CONGRATULATIONS you are BLESSED.

    If you have normal skin, do not be complacent. Cleanse, tone, moisturize, and never ever forget to wear sunblock. You should also consider using antioxidant serum to prevent collagen breakdown and signs of aging. Your skin is already balanced so your focus should be on prevention and maintenance.
